JUDITH STONEY

A SYNOPSIS OF EXHIBITIONS AND PAINTINGS OVER THE LAST DECADE:

2011
Major Artwork so far in 2011 is a large canvas 1.8 x 1.2m painted from an inspirational helicopter flight Judith Stoney took over Lake Eyre in Central Australia. "Water is the keynote in colour and design. A prized commodity in a barren and unforgiving landscape. The waterbeds snake their way through the desert creating abstract patterns and this is what I have painted! The water in this painting, once again, is the jewel-like centre of focus."
Price Range $2500-18,000
Lake Eyre.
A Red Edge Canvas.
2010
Private commissions and small viewings at Middle Park Gallery this year.
Judith has started to incorporate cloth and sew objects and beads into the Red Edge canvasses, she explains, "...in these paintings you can just see the distant Wandobunni Waterhole which is some of the reason for the new phase of Desert Garden and Red Edge paintings...the blue mid-horizon line is the cradle that inspires these art works. The use of three dimensions has been necessary to create the illusion of sparkling vitality which I saw in the minutiae of the sparce vegetation and arid landscape. Water is the important thing you see? Water promotes this delicate growth and adds layers
of subtleties. The life-force is captured in the dull glow and sharp brightness of three dimensional applications - hence the incorporation of jewels into the canvas. Water is a driving element in Aboriginal art....from experience I acknowlegde this and I have found my own way to express it." Price range $2500-15,000

The Keeper of Time February 25, 2011 by middlepark

Meet "The Keeper of Time" schminke pigments on board [$1900] this is sold but I am taking commissions and plan to be painting three more versions of this in the coming weeks [all taken]. I'd suggest you let me know if you'd like one and I'll happily paint them at the moment....something about the eyes and the intricate feathering that is absorbing and different each time.

Answer to a frequently asked question: "Why the harlequin legs?"

According to my notebook I started painting this in my head about August 2010...it's about those intense relationships that teenage girls have.....where each girl turns the workings of her brain inside-out like vacuum cleaner bags....so her 'best friend' can sift through the dust and shit that flies everywhere? Well things do change over time but the residual of one of these relationships  is depicted in this 'portrait': For Priscilla who amused me.
Here follows a series of photos as the painting was done over a 40 hour time frame with a few breaks for a snooze.

Many people find this painting reminiscent of Dali in the sense that he had a fascination with putting large heavy animals on spindles for legs. I wasn't thinking of Dali however!

The above painting follows the theme of the cow planets but I painted it with my two little god children [3 1/2 year old twins]  helping me out with the colours!  [they were big on glitter]. It has an amazing wonkiness that makes me laugh.
